I’ve been thinking a lot about maximalism in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once and how it relates so much to the immigrant experience. And like, I just gotta ramble about it for a bit.
Because when you emigrate to a new country, there’s a push to minimize — compartmentalize your identity to fit into a census box, leave behind family items because there’s only so much room in a suitcase/backpack, get rid of anything that identifies you as an other. And it’s often seen as a good thing, because it’s an opportunity for a new start.
But Everything, Everywhere, All at Once reminds us that it’s okay to embrace it all. Maximalism takes a form in their multigenerational household, in the hobbies/business ventures Evelyn tries out, and even in Jobu Tupaki’s outfits. It’s telling imo that the place where the everything bagel is stored is so white (and maybe it’s an allusion to cream cheese??) and that it’s such a sterile and minimal environment.
I just think it’s really moving that Everything, Everywhere, All at Once seems to encourage maximalism and embracing that everything-ness because being an immigrant is such a complex identity that it shouldn’t be forced to be shrunk down.
“i love you in every universe” and “i wanted to say, in another life, i would be happy just doing laundry and taxes with you"–– OH MY GOD!!! i love love love love absolutely adore the idea that your love for a specific person carries through every universe. it may end well, it may not– but the fact that you can meet someone and fall in love with any and every iteration of them???!!! it fills my heart and shatters it on the ground holy shit
hi tonight I’m thinking of all the people who are worse off than they were this time last year. of the people who have gone downhill mentally instead of up and of the people whose lives have gotten worse instead of better.
You may be in a really awful place right now but I am telling you that there is relief ahead. You will be able to breathe again. I know you probably can’t believe that right now, so trust me instead of your own doubts. I love you.
